Panniculectomy

A panniculectomy is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, or pannus, which can hang down and cause discomfort, skin irritation, and other medical issues. This excess skin and fat can occur due to significant weight loss, pregnancy, or natural aging.

A panniculectomy is different from a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) because it only removes excess skin and fat, without tightening the abdominal muscles or reshaping the belly button. However, in some cases, a panniculectomy may be combined with a tummy tuck or other body contouring procedures for a more comprehensive result.

The surgical technique used for panniculectomy depends on the degree of excess skin and fat and the patient's individual circumstances. The incision is usually made across the lower abdomen, and the excess skin and fat are removed. The remaining skin is then pulled down and sutured to the lower abdominal area, creating a smoother and flatter appearance.

Like any surgical procedure, panniculectomy carries risks and potential complications, such as bleeding, infection, scarring, and changes in sensation. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of panniculectomy with a qualified plastic surgeon and choose the most appropriate treatment plan based on individual circumstances.
